Global Warming is a very serious problem. Waiting for governments and industrial houses to address this problem may waste valuable time, since it does take a longer time for a large governmental body or organization to change its ways.  As individuals we can change our habits and help the planet in several ways, and help save our planet.

Be a smart consumer

If we buy larger containers or bottles, it helps save the environment.  It takes less energy to manufacture one large 1.5 liters rather than several 0.5 ones.  It takes less energy to make recycled paper too.

You can also buy refill pouches of your preferred product.  This will cut down on energy usage as well as reduce wastage.

Using plastic disposable bags is not only harmful, it is uncool.  Carry a cloth or jute bag when you visit your grocer.  This helps the environment.

Moreover, buy local produce.  An average meal travels many miles to reach your table.  If you buy from local farm markets and switch to poultry and meats that come from nearby farms, you will be saving a lot of energy and reducing your carbon footprint.

Conserve power

If possible switch to power generated from natural resources such as wind and solar power.  Many states actually subsidize this.  There are several online resources that help you buy solar panels.  In case you do not need the power generated, you can always earn by selling it further.

Replace your regular bulbs with CFL bulbs.  They use 60% less energy than the normal ones.  You will save on your power bills and also reduce carbon emissions.

The most power consumed is for regulating the temperature of the house.  So always check the thermostat and ensure that it is working properly.  Clean your air-conditioning filters regularly.  Switch your thermostat down 2 percent in winters and up 2 percent in summers.  You can reduce a lot of carbon emissions this way.

These days the newer models of air-conditioners and other appliances are energy efficient.  They have better designs.  To reduce wastage of energy, it is always advisable to shift to these newer models.

One very wasteful habit is to leave appliances on standby mode.  It is always advisable to unplug or switch the appliance off.

Go green, save water and plant trees

Simple habits help a lot.  You conserve a lot of energy by switching to fresh meats rather than frozen ones.  Taking a shower saves a lot of water, rather than soaking in a tub.  Moreover low flow showerheads further reduce your water consumption.  Planting trees is an excellent way of giving back to the planet and we can make our world better by doing this.
